Please indulge my selfishness with regard to my first selection from the bookshelf, since the choice is a book written by yours truly. The Apostle Jesus, sub titled; “The Kingdom Among You” is recommended reading, not because it was authored by myself, rather because it is pertinent to the subject of the Kingdom, although it did not begin that way. Let me explain. When the project began, my intent was to address those within the church that refer to themselves as “apostolic” hence the title; The Apostle Jesus. “Fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess” — Hebrews 3:1. It was when I read the completed work that I realized that it was about the “begotten sent one’s” message of his Father’s Kingdom. It was then the sub title; “The Kingdom Among You” was added. It is my hope you will read, “The Apostle Jesus”.
The Apostle Jesus will be a difficult read for those still wrapped in the robes of religiosity but for those that are seeking a new way of living and a new way of thinking this is the book for you. Barry shows no fear as he tackles the great issues that confront the modern church. As a spiritual guide he leads us through the maze of theological contradictions that stand as a road block to all who seek the Way. As a seasoned student of the Scriptures he opens up, to those that seek the Truth, a fresh understanding of the truths of Christ. And as a spiritual person he offers, to those that seek the Way, a brand new way of living.
In his writing Barry has combined several elements critical to a good read; a deep understanding of the challenges facing the modern church and a clear presentation of insights into correcting the problem. He draws from his own experience that keeps the book from becoming too theoretical in nature. Illustrations from the life and words of others corroborate his own experience and insight presented in a manner that is provocative and yet not preachy.
On a personal note, I have known Barry a long time. There have been many times that we have sat together at our favorite restaurant and discussed our doubts, our discoveries and our passions. I recommend this book to all that seek a new understanding of what Father is doing in these days.
